Öland is a true rarity magnet. No other landscape in Sweden can show such a rich variety of environments, and is thereby ideal for many different kinds of birds to rest. In addition to this is Öland laid out as a giant compass needle in the middle of one of the largest routes for migratory birds and thereby often become the first land that the birds see when they cross the Baltic Sea – spring and autumn.
Of the rarest guests in Sweden is there 12 species that’s only been observed on Öland. And for a large number of unusual guests is Öland accountable for the highest number of observations in the country. This makes the province one of the two best in Sweden for rarities.
